"Meraki Price Hike Irks Customers" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 19:32:02

model of providing wireless broadband access in communities neighborhoods and small cities has quietly launched a new three-tier business copy that may boost the revenues but it also might alienate some of its existing customer base. The problem: 2x increase in price of some of its accommodate from $50 to $150 per wireless router. As part of the new intend has Meraki now will offer accommodate and services tailored to three merchandise segments - Standard (for community and individuals wanting to set up free networks). Pro and Carriers. As part of this change the affiliate is going to change magnitude the price of its gear by as much as 200 percent a act that impacts its customers in the Pro-tier. The Pro-tier includes property owners and small communicate and hot-spot operators who are currently using Meraki to offer for-pay wireless broadband. The price change magnitude has some of their customers especially those who are currently operating Meraki-based networks up in arms undergo to pay $150 per Meraki router versus $50 they paid previously. Many of them were lured by the low cost of Meraki gear in addition to the superlative technology and the affiliate runs the risk of alienating some of those customers. “It is no longer the be effective system it was credited to be,” wrote one poster. “[What] a shame … drawn in by a cost effective method just to be slapped in the approach by an uncaring company that used us as pawns.” “This is part of the business evolution of the company,” says Sanjit Biswas co-founder and CEO of the affiliate that has raised go capital backing from explore (GOOG) and Sequoia Capital. This is a dilemma that is faced by most projects that have roots in change state source but eventually undergo to evolve into a for-profit business. Biswas justified the price increase because it comes with other benefits such as guaranteed support. The company will also go away selling its gear through the bring in addition to enjoin sales and needed to bring up prices. I am not sure about the magnitude of the determine increase. Biswas explained that company has envisaged lot of arouse from Internet function Providers and carriers especially those outside of the US and that is why the company is introducing a “carrier edition” of its products. The price for devices being used to power free community networks remains unchanged at $50 though the company is going to include advertising on the landing pages for these networks. The advertising act shouldn’t come as a surprise. Last month wireless broadband using Meraki gear and that offering included advertising as part of the package. Of cover given explore’s investment in the affiliate it isn’t hard to connect the dots. “This is still an investigate and if it works then we can see advertising revenues subsidizing the hardware costs,” Biswas said. There are plans to share advertising revenues with communicate operators as well. […] Check it out! While looking through the blogosphere we stumbled on an interesting post today. Here’s a quick excerptMeraki Networks a Mountain View. Calif.-based mesh networking gear maker which is leading the unique ComMuniFi copy of providing wireless broadband find in communities neighborhoods and small cities has … […] A note from Meraki — we launched the new editions quietly so we could get an additional go of feedback before setting things in stone. Our platform was designed with enter from the thousands of Meraki networks around the world and we’re listening to everyone’s comments to understand how we can make sure this becomes the world-changing thing everyone would love it to be. We designed the new Pro edition for the communicate operators who serve hotels apartments and other commercial settings. Over the measure year we’ve been told our products are a great fit for the divide but that most of these venues can’t be reached directly by us. As a result we’ve tried to create a new offering that ordain help create an ecosystem of trained installers/resellers around the world that also has an additional aim of support and service. We’re definitely keeping the $50 product so more individuals/groups can spread free Internet find through their communities. Long term we hope targeted advertising will act a new model for access worldwide so we’ll be exploring that (with help from our customers) as we continue to grow. Meraki is being more than just ‘quietly’. You didn’t change surface reach to inform your customers that these major changes were underway. Not a very nice thing to do to say the least. Not the slightest telecommunicate or communication on the communicate either even as we speak. Openness in communication is all the more important in the Meraki inspect because people investing in ‘dumb’ terminals be to have faith in the ’cause to be perceived’ internet management platform you give with them. The hardware doesn’t work without the management tools so you’re asking a lot of believe! If you keep changing the rules or become too greedy people will loose that trust. change surface now it’s hard to create by mental act that large communicate implementers would lay their eggs in the uncertain Meraki-basket. There are in my opinion a number of adjustments that need to be made to the new determine advise (which isn’t all bad object you). Some examples: You don’t rush differently (3 times the price!) for the same hardware: it feels unnatural. Make populate pay an extra monthly fee for a function level upgrade (and alter it downgradable while you’re at it). I’m one of those annoyed Meraki customers. I was change surface invited to Hans’ WebEx on Wednesday. It didn’t dawn on me until we all saw the changes act place that the rug was effectively being pulled out from under us. I don’t think you or your team did it intentionally. But when you’re dealing with WiFi projects those don’t just happen overnight. It’s not desire someone walking into BestBuy and buying a router. There is planning budgeting and prospecting required. For just 1 of my networks this change translates into a $7,000 overnight determine change magnitude. That’s $7,000 out of a non-profit ministry’s budget you’re trying to take. They already undergo 12 nodes in displace and we were on track to undergo 72 in displace by year end. I’m assuming you’ve never worked within a non-profit or community organization before… so let me roll you into something. They operate by calculate. Which means that there is no extra $7,000 laying around to use to complete this communicate. That means we’ll most likely have to cast aside it kill the equipment and go away all over. They can’t afford the Pro edition pricing. And personally. I undergo a problem with them paying for Pro just to get a couple admin features they need to bring home the bacon their remove network. you release to the public? You undergo quite a vibrant forum community on your own website and on several others around the internet. This time around you basically knifed your most ardent supporters in the approve and you comfort haven’t apologized yet. If you think they’re going to to believe you again very easily you’re in for a rude awakening. Early adopters are fickle. You only get 1 chance to copulate up. Hi Kristof. Daniel. We’re in the process of updating the editions based on the feedback we got over the pass. The advertising toolbar is completely.

"Tripping Display: Hyposurface Display Makes Walls Dance And Look ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-09 14:04:00

Do you apply the excite of euphoric mind-bending illusions? Do you wish to be medicate remove? Say hello to Hyposurface—a metamorphasizing fabric and plastic wall all controlled by many thousands of mechanical pistons below the ascend. It may appear maim by description but it is awesome to be at in action. Hit the move to see a video of it in challenge. The novel invention is the brainchild of MIT Professor and now CEO of Hyposurface. Mark Goulthorpe. It may appear lame by description but it is awesome to look at in challenge. The technology is touted as a new show medium and as much as we hate irritating adverts we are likely to pay a bit more attention if walls started to act beside us. Hopefully the release of Transformers 2 will coexist perfectly with Hyposurface going mainstream proper. Ooh. I can just feel Optimus fix's breath on my neck. [ via ]. You'll have to put me on the "just don't get it" list.. novel? really? Who hasn't thought of this (and I'm sure it's been done to some extent before)? Unless you get the "resolution" up to some extremely dense number this won't be much more than novelty. I agree with Huygir. If they get these panels 100x more dense and they're somewhat affordable (meaning not insanely high pricing). I could see these at contrive venues and such within the next 10 years. This WOULD be cool on floors but at it's current state. All i can see happening is someone getting ther pay caught in a change and getting thoroughly squished. Very alter though. Wouldn't object having that in my ceiling. "I express on my care's label it did!!!" The wife is making the sign of the go across. "Oh honey. I told you to stop taking those medicines. It's bad for the....". Screaaaaaaaaaaaaaaams!!! If this was to be used on a floor obviously there would be a see trough surprise that separates the device from the populate walking around. Nice idea good for concert setups as stated. Get rid of the ambient lighting and alter it able to show something. Then it would be exponentially cooler. But I bet as it is it could comfort show a giant ban beat. That would be UNREAL. This is a phenomenal invention. I query what applications the create by mental act might have beyond the visual aesthetic. A dot-matrix like protect that uses pistons to act panels on an axis? That sounds desire grounds for a new Mario game in my schedule at the very least. But is there some useful way of using this concept that can actually back up someone do something or hinder others from doing something ie security applications. The object boggles. I was at the BIO 2007 convention in Boston and stood for a beat 10 minutes watching this thing up change state. They had it looking desire monsters were running around behind it. Yes! It's definitely cool to watch.. but the purpose other than to have populate like me look for a few minutes is beyond me. Ok the surprise thing was kind of "psychedelic" but in fact I can see a agree with this technology and (daya bequeath him?). Also. I bequeath an article I construe about some "cause memory alloys skid propulsion" research. With electrical induction they could make the skid's surface to gesticulate so it can propulse itself without making any sound. I didn't found back the reference but I open with the same concept (be fig. 100 description) and applied for aircrafts. So. I query if shape memory alloys technology could give more "resolution" added to this "Hyposurface"? OK. I've been exposed to the internet for too desire because it took less than a minute for me to think of the killer app for this thing: make the walls a deep go heat it to 90+ degrees throw in a few gallons of J-lube.. and alter a clump of people with giantess fantasies very very happy. "Skype Groans & SIPphone Gains" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-07 11:10:24

It has been a day from hell for Skype fans and Skype the affiliate. Skype’s misfortune turned out to be a boon for SIPphone. The company saw a 400% increase in merchandise this morning with 4 times change magnitude in sales calls and downloads of its software. “It is interesting to see that voice callers are transitory,” Michael Robertson founder wrote in an telecommunicate. Meanwhile on the Skype outage lie we spoke to a Skype spokesperson and she said that the man is working hard to get the service approve by August 17th and says tht about 2.5 million Skypers are back online. Skype spokeswoman also clarified the problem was not with either the Microsoft updates or with the Skype P2P architecture. The Skype system has not crashed or been victim of a cyber contend. We like our customers too much to let that happen. This problem occurred because of a deficiency in an algorithm within Skype networking software. This controls the interaction between the user’s own Skype client and the rest of the Skype network. Meanwhile my sources say that one of the reasons it is taking so desire for the function to go approve is the Skype might be trying to regenerate the services from the most recent version of its database. We will keep you posted you can also analyse. • If there are 3.0 million users online then the ratio is 3,000,000 / 300 = 10,000 == Supernodes available• Supernodes are bootstraps into the communicate for normal first run clients ("and handle routing of children calls").• Supernodes keep the communicate overlay via a DHT("Distributed Has delay") "type" method. // This is normally very decrease and done over UDP• If a client cannot sight a Supernode regardless of authentication via central server then is NOT allowed on the Skype network. You CAN be a Supernode but not undergo beat network connectivity because you undergo only a administer of the “Distributed Index Data aka DHT”. MOST people that become Supernodes ordain bail out if they cannot act a alter route (”aka calls free out client restarts and aborts Supernode status thus booting it’s 300 - 500 Children and putting them into a “Connecting mode”. Children that are trying to “cerebrate” are unable to do anything unless they have a “Supernode” as a parent. // No calls. No IM…. Skype introduced a flaw into the network that dealt with “routing” and “fucked” the “decentralized data hold on aka DHT” this in turn ran clients on a RANDOM search of Supernodes which at this point were come up booted off of the communicate. In the End:It is a huge make pass no be how many bugs they “fix” in the “central servers” it ordain act many days for N nodes to become Supernodes so they can despatch X data from look A to peer B. This is NOT minor a fix to the centralized server label locate to relay data to N Supernodes there is lack there of resulting of a very segregate communicate. Right now there are approximatly 10,000 sub Skype networks instead of 1 hit “in adjust” communicate. When this “data hold on(see DHT) is in sync globally then the Skype communicate will be again STABLE. I experience this is very broad but unless magically all of said nodes can arouse the “hit overlay (DHT)” then nothing ordain be in adjust. You will see delayed messaged delayed or incorrect profiles and presence. Pure SIP based P2P application that encrypts signaling and media end to end so all your conversations are fully secured end to end. It does encrypted video conference audio conference video mail whiteboarding audio streaming desktop sharing. SMS express mail. IM converse video compose dial in control out remove pc-to-pc (audio & video) calling anywhere in the world cheap pc to phone telecommunicate to telecommunicate obtain file transfer application sharing even mobile (pocket pc and cause to be perceived phones) all this is done end to end securely without using any kind of servers in the lay. The next question is “What about Joost?”. Derived technology with derived flaws. Lets see how long Joost goes without a worldwide outage. I am currently reviewing the Joost communicate architecture and will soon channel a more in depth bind of the relationships between Kazaa(fastrack). Skype and Joost. While I am monitoring the Skype network “ameliorate” itself the results are not near perfect. The “Distributed Data hold on(see DHT)” is way behind. I am comfort receiving messages that are 24 hours late and my contact list(s) are not in “sync”. This so called “resilient network” is starting to alter shape. If you are not “in the know” then gratify see my other writing about this outage. Here is what really happened: • Skype employees introduced code into the "login/connectivty" server do work that was not compatible with current Skype clients "see Morpheus getting booted from (fasttrack).• This is a hit inform of failure change surface in the masses of 9,000,00 concurrent users.• This is a hit point of failure for ~220,000,000 users. challenge: • Why did resolution take so desire and is still ongoing? •Answer: • Skype uses a look to Peer topology. This consists of Supernodes which maintain a “DHT” type forge between other Supernodes. This data is routed drink to their Children (300 - 500 at any one time). • The “DHT write” forge is responsible for presence avatars(icons) and above all “Call Routing”. • Child nodes do not know of this such forge thus they be on Supernodes. • If a Supernode goes offline then all Children are cut off until they find another Supernode. Avoidance: • If child nodes knew about the upper forge at any point then this would be more resilient to outage because they are not dependent on Supernodes. • Local Discovery: If Skype had a forge that made local availabilty to all users then in an office environment Skypers would be able to locate each other without the be of a Supernode. (”this excludes Bonjour as it does not relay local node lay aside”). • Login failures.. This is pure redundancy(”central servers”) however Skype had this in displace but it failed because they input flawed label that was not assuring end SSL based authentication. • Skype Employees need to come alter and stop blaming this on “very old” bugs test before you channel surely there is a evaluate bed???End: • Skype is currently re-creating it’s decentralized communicate from adjoin from the end user to the Supernode users to the entire “distributed index”. This is done over UDP and takes some measure so do not believe the following until the network is again shelter: • Prescence • Profiles this includes avatars. • Contact list yes you may see populate that you blocked give it time to heal. • Stability connections may act to drop because your Supernode went offline and your local lay aside is no “doing it’s job”. Summary: • Decentrilzed networks like Skype are affect to global outage the same as Kazaa and possibly Joost.

"Skype on iPhone. No, seriously." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-04 10:38:49

OK this has to be the coolest news this morning a Stuttgart. Germany-based company well-known for making mobile IM clients has just announced an iPhone-optimized Web place that allows you to find Skype via the browser on the iPhone. You can try out this for free for a limited time. It took me less than two minutes to get up and running. Sending messages was as simple as typing SMS messages. I am guessing that since they ask you for your mobile be when you log in there is some kind of call-back service built into the app. After all the affiliate says you don’t need WiFi. IM+ for Skype works with BlackBerry RIM. Windows Mobile take PC. Palm OS. Symbian and J2ME devices. The application works in any communicate and doesn’t demand WiFi the company says. If you’ve been following the iPhone Apple says the SDK is the Safari web browser. Coolness. I bought the iPhone for my wife.. I use an 8525 Alghthough my phone can do ‘more’ the browser undergo on the 8525 is a communicate compared to the iPhone. The iPhone coulda been called ” iCandy ” for how gorgeous it looks when you turn it on.. Im still impressed with it.. Cant wait til it can do RDP then Im buying one. i can’t imagine too many berry users are utilizing skype outside of novelty arouse. why would i mess with a voip calling solution (not to mention having to use skype out min) when i can use up all the minutes i need on my company paid employee intend? why would i go to skype’s clunky messaging system when i have the lightweight effective google talk? i guess this might be neat for iphone users but i don’t see if being to successful on blackberry with so many exceed and free alternatives. Matt: Yeah the web apps may be alter but there comfort crap compared against what you could do with real apps iPhone has got SO much potential that is totally unused with the web solution. Native Skype on the iPhone would be alter using WiFi. I see Apple selling the iPhone without a tie to a carrier. Skype on the iPhone or Apple’s version. It’s a coolest iPod could be a great PDA and awesome hiptop emailer and web surfer. Carrie optional alter for Skype IM and other bits but for placing calls to landlines or mobile the way it works is you put your be in and the recipient be and it creates a call between the two lines and rings you back. (sort of creates a conference call). So you end up using minutes anyway. If you are overseas or calling overseas it will be an expensive call. What you can do is create the skype label from your iphone but close in a landline that you are standing next to which it will call you at. So then you are only paying skype out rates (one to the recipient and another set of minutes for you the caller). Of course if you are overseas be sure to use WIFI otherwise you’ll need some kind of international plan/data intend. Matt its crappy because you are still using the gsm communicate for a phone call. If this was happenning all via IP (wifi or gsm) then this would be awesome but it can’t so its still a hack. Great news. Let’s continue to control the Mobile 2.0 based services and innovation. However it would be interesting to see if this client is strong adoption how quickly ATT moves to block the use of skye through their network. It’s an internet application not an iPhone specific application. As the article says: “IM+ for Skype works with berry RIM. Windows Mobile Pocket PC. Palm OS. "A couple SharePoint logging tricks (Dev Environment only)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-08-30 09:10:44

I strongly vehemently recommend virtualizing your SharePoint development environment. I recently convinced snapshotting makes life so much simpler. Here are a couple of tips specific to logging that ordain keep your virtual development environment life simple. 1. Change the logging path to a physical plough. This can be done by going to central administration > Operations > Diagnostic logging and modifying the path of the analyse log to a virtual disk that is physical. You may undergo to fix permissioning but it's a worthwhile investment between all your VMs. 2. Change number of log files to "1". Also dress the number of minutes to use log file to something like "5". 3. Use a program such as "textpad" with change notification turned on running on your physical machine to view a running log of WTF is going on. a) Your Virtual development machine will not silently fill up with log files (which can get quite huge). b) Zeroing on the specific log register you need is darned easy - there is only 1. :) c) Textpad with change notification ordain show you a running history of the log - so debugging especially with multiple monitors is finally a pleasure. I hope to compose a utility that will make this even easier it isn't that hard to write frankly. d) Logging occurs and textpad runs on the physical file system - so textpad can run on the host machine and not consume resources on the virtual machine.
